I have a guitar that is deep body , 5" to be exact. It has a neck to body joint at 12th fret. I know a standard baritone has a longer scale. Can I fit a set of baritone strings to this and have any success? Mainly just out of curiosity. |

What is the scale length of the guitar in question? I have a fingerstyle guitar with a 25.7" scale length and I use light gauge strings tuned to DAGGAD. I haven't ever thought about using baritone strings since baritones are usually 27"+ scale length instruments. So, I would guess no to the baritone strings unless you have an unusually long scale length. The baritone strings on a 25-25.5" scale would be floppy if tuned B-B or C-C and would be destructive tuned E-E. |

There's one way to find out: put them on the guitar and tune it up. I'm assuming you want to tune much lower than standard... if you're tuning E to E be prepared for catastrophic failure with all the extra tension. Intonation could be an issue as you go up the neck... bigger strings are stiffer and may need a lot more compensation than your current saddle can provide. Also the nut slots will probably need to be widened. My guess is that the tone will be quite wonky with strings too fat for the scale length, but you never know... you might like it. |

If you are considering putting a different neck on the guitar body then if for example the twelve fret clear guitar has a 650mm scale length (25.6") then a 725mm (28.5") scale length neck joined to the same body with fourteen frets clear would have the bridge in pretty much the same position on the body. This scale length is very much in baritone guitar territory and a 5" deep body should work well. |

If the guitar has a long soundboard and a deep body the baritone strings might get you down to a low C tuning without too many problems |

When I originally laid this guitar out I set the sound hole for 14th fret mount and then made a 12th fret neck .... Rookie doofuss move so now the distance from bridge to center of sound hole is 7" with a 5" body depth . this puts the bridge dead center "or close" in lower bout |
